Side event at the 79th World Health Assembly called for strengthening the response to contaminated infant formula

During the 79th World Health Assembly, the side event “Contaminated Commercial Formulas: The Need for a Global Response to Protect Children’s Health” was held on May 22. This forum addressed the urgent need to strengthen the regulation and monitoring of these products.

The event was coordinated by the International Baby Food Action Network (IBFAN) and the International Lactation Consultant Association (ILCA), with support from Colansa. Colansa’s advocacy coordinator, Agustina Luque, was present in Geneva.

Recent alerts regarding contaminated infant formula highlight the need for safer, more transparent food systems focused on the health of babies and children. Since November 2025, infant formula recalls in more than 130 countries have raised concerns about potential serious health risks, including infant deaths.
