In July, a position paper was published with the collaboration of Colansa’s Fiscal and Economic Policy Hub: “Sweetened Beverage Taxes: Designing and Promoting Tax Policies with the Highest Standards”.
Sweetened beverage (SB) taxes are a critical tool for governments to address rising rates of obesity, diabetes, cancers and other diet-related noncommunicable diseases linked to their consumption. However, an SB tax only delivers on that public health goal if it’s designed correctly, with rates high enough to shift behavior, coverage broad enough to prevent unhealthy substitutions by companies and revenue reinvested in the communities most affected by SB consumption.
That’s why the Global Health Advocacy Incubator, alongside Colansa, the Center for Science in the Public Interest, the O’Neill Institute and Vital Strategies, developed a new Sweetened Beverage Tax Position Paper: a guide to help governments design SB taxes built for real, lasting public health impact.
