On Tuesday (20), Colansa’s executive director, Elisa Mendonça, and advocacy coordinator, Lorenza Longhi, were in Rome for the 54th Plenary Session of the Committee on World Food Security (CFS 54) at the FAO.
In collaboration with the World Health Organization, the ministries of health of Brazil and France, CRESS/INSERM (France), and INSP (Mexico), Colansa organized a side event that addressed the health impacts of increased consumption of ultra-processed products.
“Ultra-processed foods are shaping dietary patterns and food environments globally, with implications for nutrition, health, environmental sustainability, equity and food systems governance”, said Elisa Mendonça.
It was also addressed the role of unhealthy food environments, marked by the availability, affordability and aggressive marketing of ultra-processed foods, and present concrete examples in regional and national levels to examine food environments, regulatory approaches, standard-setting and policy coherence, identifying opportunities and challenges for coordinated action to support healthier diets, resilient and sustainable food systems, and improved food security and nutrition outcomes.
