Front-Of-Package Food Labels Evidence Gap Map

This Evidence Gap Map systematizes worldwide evidence regarding five types of front-of-package food labels (FOPL): warning labels, traffic light labels, Nutri-score, Health Star Rating, and Healthy Choice Logo.

    Why an evidence gap map?

Evidence gap maps are a visual representation of the available evidence, also identifying the lack of evidence, in a specific domain. We used the EPPI-Reviewer evidence synthesis software and the EPPI-Mapper application for the development of this map; both softwares were developed by the EPPI-Centre at the Institute of Education, University College London, UK.

What will you see in this evidence gap map?

This tool is organized as an evidence matrix of interventions or characteristics in the rows and outcomes in the columns. Each intersection cell in the matrix indicates the number of corresponding articles or publications. In this specific evidence gap map, the included publications are classified according to the following attributes or features:

    • Types of FOP labels
    • Study design
    • Population age groups
    • Geographical location of studies and outcomes

The following outcomes of interest were differentiated:

    • Producer knowledge and attitudes on the implementation of FOPL
    • Healthy food supply
    • Knowledge, attitudes and understanding related to nutrition, health and package nutritional information
    • Use of nutritional information or changes on food purchases
    • Quality and quantity of diet
    • Nutritional status
    • Health outcomes
    • Nutritional profile of products
    • Other legal, economic and policy formulation outcomes

Each intersection cell shows the number of publications on that topics, these are represented using colored bubbles (yellow for warning label, red for traffic lights, green for Nutri-score, blue for Health Star Rating, and orange for Healthy Choice Logo). The bigger the bubble, more publications are included in that intersection.

What type of evidence was included in this gap map?

Through a systematic search on five bibliographic databases 1,720 articles were found. From them, 756 were excluded for being duplicated, resulting in 964 publications to screen on title and abstract, according to the inclusion and exclusion criteria. After reviewing the titles, abstracts and full texts, a total of 380 publications were extracted and included in the evidence map. No limit on the year of publication was considered, and only articles published in Spanish and English were selected.

How to access this evidence gap map?

The FOPL Evidence Gap Map is available to every member of Colansa. To access, you must submit a request including a research proposal related to a topic addressed by the map, in addition to signing a collaboration and confidentiality agreement for its use.
