Colansa Participates in a Meeting in Brasília on a Draft Resolution Regarding Ultra-Processed Foods

On Monday, August 18, Colansa’s executive director, Elisa Mendonça, and advocacy coordinator, Lorenza Longhi, participated in a consultation meeting in Brasília with non-state actors to draft a resolution on ultra-processed foods to be presented to the World Health Organization (WHO).

The meeting was organized by the Health Division of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and chaired by the Secretary for Multilateral Political Affairs, Ambassador Carlos Márcio Bicalho Cozendey. In May of this year, during the 79th World Health Assembly, Health Minister Alexandre Padilha announced Brazil’s intention to propose a draft resolution to the WHO aimed at establishing a framework of rules regarding the advertising, monitoring, and marketing of ultra-processed products.

“This is an extremely important initiative that the Brazilian Ministry of Health, with the support of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, is leading as a proposal for the next World Health Assembly. A draft resolution proposing rules for the advertising and monitoring of the marketing of ultra-processed foods. It is also an opportunity to raise awareness and expand the reach of the innovative initiatives that Latin American countries have been developing in terms of regulatory measures,” said Lorenza Longhi.
